چکیده

Eighteen-month-olds successfully imitate actions, but little research has investigated their ability to imitate and generalize strategies. We explored young children’s ability to learn a sorting strategy from a model’s demonstration. In a Modeling condition (N = 24) children witnessed a model sort objects by kind. They were then given a chance to interact with the same objects, followed by new sets of objects that varied by color. Children imitated the model’s sorting strategy more often when using the modeled objects than when using a new set of objects, suggesting that children can learn a strategy through observation but that the learning is tenuous. Children in the Modeling condition sorted by kind more often than in a control condition (N = 12); however, the conditions did not differ overall. 2

Learning the rules: observation and imitation of a sorting strategy by 36-month-old children.

Two experiments were used to investigate the scope of imitation by testing whether 36-month-olds can learn to produce a categorization strategy through observation. After witnessing an adult sort a set of objects by a visible property (their color; Experiment 1) or a nonvisible property (the particular sounds produced when the objects were shaken; Experiment 2), children showed significantly mo...

Social learning promotes understanding of the physical world: Preschool children's imitation of weight sorting.

We investigated whether social learning, specifically imitation, can advance preschoolers' understanding of weight. Preschoolers were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The experimental group saw an adult intentionally categorize an array of four visually identical objects based on weight. Then, children's weight-based sorting of the objects was evaluated. To test generalizat...

Age-related changes in deferred imitation from television by 6- to 18-month-olds.

During the second year of life, infants exhibit a video deficit effect. That is, they learn significantly less from a televised demonstration than they learn from a live demonstration. We predicted that repeated exposure to televised demonstrations would increase imitation from television, thereby reducing the video deficit effect. Independent groups of 6- to 18-month-olds were exposed to live ...

Developmental changes in imitation from television during infancy.

Infants' (N = 276) ability to learn from television under seminaturalistic conditions was examined in five experiments with 12-, 15-, and 18-month-olds. In all experiments, an adult performed a series of specific actions with novel stimuli. Some infants watched the demonstration live, and some infants watched the same demonstration on television from prerecorded videotape. Infants' ability to r...

The influence of electronic sound effects on learning from televised and live models.

Infants rapidly accrue information via imitation from multiple sources, including television and electronic toys. In two experiments, we examined whether adding sound effects to video or live demonstrations would influence imitation by 6-, 12-, and 18-month-olds. In Experiment 1, we added matching and mismatching sound effects to target actions presented by a televised model. We found that 6-mo...
